Every year the racing punters wait with baited breath for arguably the most important race of the year. Over the last decade we have seen a number of legendary horses grace this famous race such as two-time winner Kauto Star, Denman and Imperial Commander.
The highlight of the festival which will sit in its usual Friday afternoon slot had a controversial 2014, with 20/1 long shot Lord Windermere only given the win after a Stewards Inquiry after he was found to have impeded On His Own. Despite this the win was awarded to Davy Russell giving Jim Culloty his first Gold Cup win as trainer, with him best remembered for being the jockey of Best mate, the winner of three Gold Cups.
This year we see Lord Windermere return to the mix, but again will go off without being considered a natural contender. That being said, this horse does have the added bonus of being last year’s winner when at long odds and so punters may fancy betting sites a few quid on for sentimental value, in the hope he can again cause a shock. You can get Lord Windermere at 14/1 at both BetVictor and Ladbrokes.
The outright favourite for the Gold Cup is Silviniaco Conti who finished fourth in the 2014 race and goes off at 10/3 at PaddyPower and 888Sport. The Paul Nicholls trained horse has had a good year since the festival last year, winning three out of his last four races, with the latest coming at Kempton on Boxing Day when he won well in the King George VI Chase for the second year in a row, in a race considered the second most prestigious in England with only the Gold Cup considered a better race.
The challenges to Silviniaco Conti look likey to come from Many Clouds and Road to Riches who will look to go off around the 8/1 mark. You can still get Road to Riches at 10/1 with Totesport and Betfred, but is likely to drop on the run in to the festival so if you think this horse is the one, then it may be best to put an ante post bet on now. He has won on his last two runs at Leopardstown and Down Royal but has not run in 2015 and could be being held back especially for this race.
Many Clouds has won its last three races with the recent Cheltenham win in January a good marker for what form he is in. This Irish horse could be the greatest challenger to Silviniaco Conti and currently finds itself second favourite where you can find him at 8/1 at many bookies including Bet365, BetFred and Skybet.
There are others in the race that could get into the mix such as Hollywell which you can get at 10/1 at sports betting sites Coral, Ladbrokes and William Hill. This horse will likely be ridden by the retiring AP McCoy and the for this reason alone the odds could drop so best to get on now.
Former winner Bobs Worth will again partake in the race and the 2013 winner knows how to win and could cause a shock if race conditions fall his way. The Nicky Henderson trained horse will again have Barry Geraghty on board and you can find him as low as 16/1 which for a former winner only two years ago is a price many should jump on.
All eyes will be on Silviniaco Conti though and should he not win, it will probably be down to his own mistakes which he is prone to make. The course length should be fine but with two former winners in the line-up, the pressure will be on.
