Cheltenham Gold Cup day is the highlight of the racing calendar as punters make the most of the last day of the festival, whilst sinking Guinness hoping for a nice win to see them through the weekend.
The Gold Cup has a fine history with the last decade bringing some of the most classic races of all time with the Denman/Kauto Star battles which included Long Run in the epic race of 2011.
This year we have a heavy favourite in Silviniaco Conti from the Paul Nicholls trained stable with Noel Fehily likely to be on board. Last time out on Boxing Day, he won the prestigious King George VI for the second year in succession at Kempton and will hope it is third time lucky, after disappointing in previous Gold Cup’s. Form has generally been good this season and only a trip out at Wetherby in November lacked the result you’d expect for a contender. Though he is still a heavy favourite, sports betting seem to be starting to look elsewhere and has drifted out to 4/1 at both PaddyPower and Betway.
Last year’s winner Lord Windermere will look to join the ranks of some of the great horses as a two time winner and Davy Russell, already a winner in the colours earlier in the week, seems to be going under the radar somewhat. This could be a huge mistake as this online betting horse and jockey combo know what it takes to win this race. Last time out, he kept out of the way at the back of the field and with 18 declared for the race, if all goes to plan, don’t be surprised to see the Jim Culloty trained horse in contention again. Djakadam seems to be fluctuating in the market and we think it is the Willie Mullins factor that has seen his price go up and down. This six year old did win last time out at Gowren Park, but his form has been patchy and it is a surprise to see him as second favourite and we cannot see him retaining that as the race gets nearer.
A lot of money will sentimentally go on the AP McCoy ridden Carlingford Lough. He is in with a shout and will we see a fairytale ending to the great McCoys career with a win in the biggest race in the UK racing calander. He has been pretty steady in the betting and can be found at betting sites 10/1 at Stan James and Coral.
Coneygree seems to be getting some backing from the punters and it is warranted after winning its last three races. He could be the surprise package that no one seems to be talking about is found at 10/1 at Ladbrokes and Betfair.
Holywell remains strong in the betting at around 9/1 with both Boylesports and Ladbrokes and will likely go off as second favourite. You can also not count out Bob’s Worth who is at a slightly higher price than normal at Totesport and Betvictor who have him at 14/1. If the pace suits there are a number of contenders in what will be a closely fought contest.
