This has not been an easy set of games to deal with. In the Test series, it was a little easier to predict who would be the team to fall apart. One game aside, it was usually a clueless India side. In the ODI’s, it’s been England who have lacked any real game plan, and India have capitalised.

Helped by several flat England performances, MS Dhoni’s men have looked refreshed in recent weeks, and they can wrap up a straight forward series win if they’re triumphant in the fourth ODI on Tuesday.

Bookmakers are generally making India the favourites, but Stan James have gone to extremes in pricing India at 1.72, with Bet365 making England a best price of 2.00. India are best priced 1.85 with Boylesports.

It’s been a terrible two years for England, and it feels like it’s been a terrible forever as far as India go in playing test matches away from home. After the test victorys, England have gone back to resembling the side that looked lost in the Ashes. India, who still aren’t great, are playing the attacking cricket that was lacking during the test series.

A six wicket victory secured India a 2-0 lead after the third ODI, and a win on Tuesday wraps up the series. A 2-2 draw is still a possibility, and hosts England will want to avoid a whitewash and salvage some pride by bouncing back over the next two meetings.

England’s batting was the main issue on the weekend, as no one passed the 50 mark. It gave the bowlers little chance and in the ODI format, 227 was never going to be enough. India secured their victory with seven overs remaining.

We shouldn’t totally discredit England and ignore what India of done. England are indeed facing a team that are the ODI kings, having swept up in recent competitions, but it should be said England looked completely lost against a decent spin attack on a pitch that didn’t offer that much additional spin.

There are plenty of people out there who believe that England’s problems will never subside as long as Alastair Cook is captain. I’m not sure it’s that black and white, but we know Cook will be the man that leads England in to the World Cup.

Cook has been putting up positive partnerships with Alex Hales at the top of the order, but England completely failed to build on an 80-1 start on Saturday. Instead, a complete collapse followed, with no aggression shown towards an India bowling line-up that was clearly struggling to find a rhythm early on.

That lack of aggression cost England and summed up their mental state in this series. The loss would have done nothing to improve that, and now India will probably tie this series up.

England have been far superior to India so far through the series in matches where many predicted they would struggle. It is difficult to look past Rahul Dravid in the Indian side right now. Dravid has scored the most runs on this tour for India so far and he is the one player in the Indian batting line up who seems to be in very good touch. Stuart Broad is the man of the moment after taking a hat-trick during the second Test. We backed India to win the first test outright but we were beaten by the draw. In the second test we took the visitors (draw no bet) and it paid off. As the teams prepare for the third test in Southampton, I believe the value is still with the visitors as they aim to take a commanding series lead.

Most of the talk in the build up to the third test is centred on how England are in turmoil. Whilst I don’t deny that, it’s amusing that that’s the talk of the press. Why? Well, I don’t mean to be blunt… but haven’t we been a joke for nearly two years now?

India staged a rather complete performance as they took the second test by 95 runs at Lord’s, and with that win the visitors ended their absolutely dreadful drought outside of India, where they hadn’t won in 15 matches.

The challenge for the experienced MS Dhoni in leading his young India side now is to warn against complacency. England, despite their obvious problems, haven’t been any worst on the whole than India have been on their travels.

For such a big nation in the world of cricket to be winless for that long, clearly there are some underlying issues. One win against a poorly performing side doesn’t change that, so the big test for India is reproducing their second test performance and finding back to back wins.

India are likely to remain largely unchanged and will go with just the one spinner in the ranks, although the increased training efforts of Rohit Sharma suggest a batting return is imminent.

England, who will hand Jos Butler a debut ahead of Matt Prior, desperately need to change something. It’s easy to say, and I write it every time I cover them. I don’t really know what needs changing anymore, but it clearly starts with your captain setting a better example.

Alastair Cook, with the quality he has, should be able to step up in big situations. That really hasn’t happened and he’s too often failed to lead by example (let’s point out other England captains have been guilty of that recently, not just him).

A bit of rain followed by a half decent performance isn’t nearly enough to cover up India’s problems, but perhaps it’s something to build on. It may be worth keeping in mind that the visitors more than regressed back to square one after their last victory here in England, going on to receive two of their biggest hammerings to date.

England open the third ODI as narrow favorites to bounce back as they’re priced at 1.91 with YouWin. Visitors India are 2.10 with Bet365 if you think they’ll back up their recent performance.

India secured their big victory with the help of the Duckworth-Lewis method last time out, but please do not be pulled by the outcome. As well as India did in parts, England did poorly. It wasn’t the best performance from the hosts.

Another key factor to consider is the injury of Rohit Sharma. As well as obviously losing a player with serious ability, I’m sure it’ll be a huge mental blow also. The Indians may well fell that once again things are conspiring against them just as they have a chance to turn the corner.
Whilst Sharma was dangerous with the bat, equally dangerous was Ravi Jadeja with the ball. He was perhaps the real difference in the second ODI. England had no answers to his bowling on the day.
The standout performer for England is quiet obvious. Bowling aside, England don’t have much to build on at the moment apart from the showings of Alex Hale. If Hale can slog his way to another fine 100, England have a lot to build on during the third ODI.
Most previews out there are putting a more positive spin on India’s chances, but I think I agree with the direction of the bookmakers odds on this occasion. There isn’t a book out there that isn’t seeing consistent money on the home side. There’s no real reasons to rely on either of them on Saturday, but I trust India away far less than I trust England at home.

England got their series against India off to the perfect start with a resounding win at Lord’s where they looked by far the better team.

England were sharper in every department and they looked in control throughout apart from a wobble at the start of day four. They will be looking to carry on their momentum at Trent Bridge where they should have the better bowling attack to suit the conditions. England go into the match as favourites with the bookies at a price of 5/4 in most places.

India were a little unlucky that they had a few things forced upon them during the Test match at Lord’s. Zaheer Khan looks unlikely to play in Nottingham after a hamstring injury and he could also be out of the third Test. England have a number of top batsmen who are all proving popular with the bookies at the moment. Swann is bowling on his home ground where he is likely to get a little more assistance from the wicket than he got at Lord’s. Swann still bowled well in London but he may be the key if India deal with the English seamers a lot better second time round.

An interesting bet is for England to have the highest opening partnership of the second Test match at 8/11 in most places. Captain Andrew Strauss and Cook have put together a brilliant relationship which has proved a pain in the side of many teams over the last 18 months. Both players will be looking to score big hundreds to help their team win the game.

Betfair is also offering a 19/20 bet on there being a ten wicket haul for any bowler at some point during the series. Swann will be looking to cash in during this match and he is more than capable of taking at least five wickets in each innings. James Anderson will also be looking to carry on his good form after picking up five wickets to put himself on the honours board at Lord’s.
