The Coral Welsh National Horse Race will now take place on Saturday afternoon after it was abandoned on the 27th December due to a waterlogged track. The race is held at Chepstow racecourse in Wales and will be run over a distance of three miles and five-and-a-half furlongs, with twenty-two fences ready to be jumped.
Leading the way with the bookmakers at the minute is Teaforthree as he is available at 7/2 with Paddy Power to claim a famous victory. The Rebecca Curtis-trained horse was a winner at the Cheltenham Festival last season, but needs an improvement on his sixth place finish last time out.
Giles Cross has odds of 12/1 with Coral and Victor Dartnall is hoping it will be third time lucky after finishing as runner-up the in the last two Welsh National races. The betting could prove to be popular on Giles Cross as he is experienced in this race.
Nigel Twiston-Davis has left the highly-rated Viking Blood in and a bet on him is available at 8/1 with Bet365. Twiston-Davis has also entered Major Malarkey, who is considered somewhat of an outsider with the bookies at 25/1. The trainer is certainly taking the Welsh National seriously and will hope that both his entries can be in contention.
As ever, Paul Nichols has a good chance of a winner with Michael Le Bon, who can be backed at 9/1 with William Hill. You can never write the champion trainer off, especially when he is set to run one of the favourites. Nicholls has also entered 25/1 shot Royal Charm.
Sona Sasta is another much talked about contender and the David Pipe-trained horse is being offered at 8/1 with betting sites BetVictor. Pipe could also run Master Overseer.
Quartz de Thaix, Universal Soldier and Alfie Spinner are all between 12/1 and 14/1 respectively with Betfred, which shows you the amount of quality in this race.
Many of the contenders will feel as though they can win this if at their best, so weather permitting, we are in for an enthralling encounter between some of the most exciting National Hunt horses around.
When it comes to placing your bets for this one though, we do think that the favourite Teaforthree is tough to look past and does offer some good value. If Curtis’ preparation is spot-on, then you would expect Teaforthree to have a bit too much quality for the rest of the field.
