England and Australia go head to head at Lords as the first of five One Day Internationals gets under way.
England will be confident as they are in good form and they always seem to play well when they are at home. Most of their players have had a short break since the West Indies tour and they also have the advantage of home support which could come in handy at some point during the series. England are the slight second favourites with the bookies and the best price going is evens with William Hill.
Australia have the edge in recent ODI meetings against England and they have played well in the couple of tour matches they have had since they arrived in the country. They have a very young and raw team which is developing all the time and this will be a massive test for those players in more ways than one. The best price going on the Aussies is 19/20 with Sportingbet.
Alastair Cook will love the fact that he gets to face a bowling attack which has plenty of pace. He thrives at the top of the order when the opposition tries to put him under pressure, he’ll just sit back and pick off the bad deliveries. Cook hasn’t had the best summer so far but he scored a century against the West Indies and will want to rectify the five runs he got when facing this attack for Essex. He is 7/2 with Ladbrokes.
Michael Clarke is a safe bet for top Australian batsman for a variety of reasons. A lot of players in the Australia top order have never played in England before and they would not have faced an attack like England’s for a while. Clarke has the experience, the technique and the skill to take this match away from England. He is 4s in most places to score the most runs for his side.
James Anderson loves playing against the Aussies because he tries to get beneath their skin and he can move the ball both ways at pace with very little change in action. If the ball starts to move in the air then it could be very difficult for many of the inexperienced Australian players to cope with. Anderson is a best betting price of 7/2 with Ladbrokes to take the most wickets.
Brett Lee is the safe bet to be top bowler from the Australian attack for the simple reason that he has the experience. There are quicker younger bowlers coming through the ranks but they are raw and could get picked off by the England top order. Lee is still quick enough to hurry any batsman and this could well be his last appearance in England. He can also swing the ball but because he is quicker than the likes of Anderson, it often doesn’t move as much through the air because it gets to the batsman sooner. He is 7/2 with Ladbrokes.
