The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the main race of the Cheltenham festival and the reason that jockeys and trainers tolerate the first three days of the meeting for the prospect of this race.
Long Run is the current favourite to take the title at 15/8. There were rumours going around that this horse had fitness doubts ahead of the big clash but they seem to have been put to one side or they were false rumours in the first place. Long Run seems to be in good form and shape and will stand a great chance of winning if there are no mistakes at any point during the race.
Kauto Star is the second favourite to win the Gold Cup at 7/2 with the bookies. This horse was passed fit earlier in the week to take part in this race after slipping in training and hurting a leg. This could still have an impact on the animal and it will be interesting to see how Kauto reacts when going over some of the bigger jumps around the Cheltenham course.
Burton Port is a horse which has shot into the third favourite position after coming shorter from a much longer betting position. This horse doesn’t have the experience of others in the race but could be set to attack the top favourites in this race if their fitness starts to dwindle at any point. Burton Port will stand a great chance of upsetting the odds if in the running inside the final couple of furlongs.
Midnight Chase is a 12/1 outsider at this stage but this price could go much shorter if there is a lot of attention for the animal. This is a horse that has experience of running in some high profile races and they don’t come much bigger than the Gold Cup. The only slight worry is that the horse is prone to making a few mistakes on the way round in a big race which will cost lost speed and position.
Synchronised is another horse rated at 12/1 to win the race. This horse is in very good form and has good form against apparently stronger horses in this race. This animal stands a great chance of taking the title if it can make it all the way round the Cheltenham racecourse without making any mistakes at all. Synchronised is a name that punters could be hearing a lot more of in the near future.
Quel Esprit is a name that a lot of regular punters will be familiar with. This horse is an out and out long shot for the title because there has been no career history of the horse cashing in when it comes to big races against stronger opponents. The best bet is to go each way because a place finish is possible. This horse has the potential but could find the going just a little too tough in such an important race.
Remember though as the Cheltenham Gold Cup is one of the biggest prizes and betting events in horse racing the bookmakers will be battling hard to get the punters betting with them.
